Course Objectives

  • How to assess the collapsed patient.
  • How to perform chest compressions and  rescue breathing.
  • Use of the Automated External Defibrillator  (AED).
  • How to place the unconscious but breathing  patient in to the recovery position.
  • Basic Oxygen (O2) Therapy
  • Approximately 700,000 cardiac arrests per year in  Europe (60,000 in the UK)
  • Survival to hospital discharge presently  approximately 5-10%
  • Currently a number of studies underway to see how  this figure can be improved
  • Bystander CPR vital intervention before arrival of  emergency services
  • Early resuscitation and prompt defibrillation (within 1 -2 minutes) can result in >60% survival
